The Day With 2.5

I’ve been upgrading my plentiful WordPress blogs in fits and starts over recent weeks (I use WordPress for a lot of my projects) :p and today I reached the final batch - which included FA.com.

I put it off not because I’m one of those annoying people who never upgrades (FA.com is almost always running on the latest version even when my other sites are not - I love my angel too much to neglect her) but I was waiting for many of my plugins to release 2.5 compatible versions before I jumped onto the 2.5 wagon. I didn’t anticipate problems because, like I said, I’m always up to date, and I’ve had precisely zero problems everywhere else but - as is always the way - FA is the only one of twelve installations I have that’s fucked up. Joyo.

Aw, I’m being unfair. It hasn’t fucked up completely - you’re reading this, right? Presumably you can comment (someone check?!) but there are a few little problems with my plugins, the main one being the issue I have with my reading library which, at the time of writing, is just not displaying. It was one of the plugins that I hacked to death and modified within an inch of its life, and I didn’t upgrade for ages because I didn’t want to have to re-model it all over again. :p Now I’m forced into doing so, so bear with me whilst I sort it out and it goes through some tidying up. ETA: It’s working now - yay! Also think my LJ-Crossposter is okay too . . . maybe?!

Other than that, after a cursory look round it looks as though everything’s rocking and rolling. Have a poke around - go on, when was the last time you checked out my content anyway? Reacquaint yourself! - and let me know if anything’s looking a little wonky. Meanwhile, I’m going back to bed with hot lemon, cough sweets and feel sorry for myself some more - I have a chest infection. Poor me. :(

Yup, looks like they’re working ;)

Even though my main blog doesn’t use WP, I was reluctant to update some of my clients’ blogs that do use it - some of them were incredibly customised and I did not like the thought of redoing all that. However, I disliked the thought of hackinz a lot more so I got on with it and did it :P

Oh yes, forgot to mention - LJ crossposter works fine since that’s how I got here! :)

The original version was throwing up a ‘fatal error’ but thankfully I found a fix out there. :)

And yes, the haxx0r threats are quite an incentive sometimes lol. And now I know my comments still work - thanks, Amelie!

Now you know what I’ve been through. ;-) just kidding

Okay, are you using Now Reading for the library? You’ll have to upgrade that to his new beta and then update your options and permalinks. I actually had to update permalinks twice. However, I did have problems with one file, I’m afraid I can’t remember which one, but I took the same file from my old Now Reading and put it over the new one and everything works. Who knows!!

I’m still upgrading sites too, it stinks. I think I have four left to go. Also moving them into full accounts from domain pointers since I upgraded my hosting. But since anything before 2.5 is considered insecure, places like Technorati and other listers/linkers are de-listing sites that are not upgrading. So I feel like I’m on a schedule, too.

I had to lose one or two plugins but at least I think SF is back to normal now, finally. :P Not that I didn’t love your design, of course, but I wanted mine back. *squeezes ridiculous pink cherry blossoms* Oh which reminds me, it took me a week and a half to figure it out but your theme is missing the call which some plugins rely upon such as Wordpress.com stats (that’s how I noticed it missing, I was like, wtf I upgrade to 2.5 and suddenly have no visitors LOL)

Okay ending the rambling here to say that I think my favorite thing I’ve discovered about 2.5 is the auto upgrade of plugins, just one click… awe.some!

Funny, it tore up my comment because I forgot to “code-ize” the code I put in. Changed how I said it, but it still makes sense! Anyway, the call I was referring to was:

    <?php wp_footer(); ?>

I used to have Now Reading on my blog but the library pages were buggy and I could never get them to display properly; so I did the only thing I could do, and that was to throw a hissy fit and deactivate it completely. Pfft.

Anyway, had a good old mooch around here (love your meez pic, how cute!) and as far as I can tell it’s all looking good :)

So far everything seems to working right for me. I do have a question about signing in/signing up to your blog. I was a registered user by the username Jessica but it said that my username was not valid when I tried signing in. When I went to register it again it said that user registration is currently not allowed. I was just wondering what the deal was. :]

Everything looks fine to me! LJ cross-post works too. ;) I’m wary of upgrading the site I’m currently working on to WP 2.5, because I’ve spent so long getting it just right and haven’t even opened the damn thing yet! Last thing I need is to spend another week tweaking it. Your site is looking fine though so maybe mine will be okay too… fingers crossed.

Get better soon, chicken. Sounds horrible. :(

Glad to see that it’s all working wonderfully… Though I’ll have to dig for my password as my cookie must have expired and I’m not logged in :(

Hope you feel better soon, I’m terribly prone to chest infections so can muchly sympathise. *hugs*

I hope you feel better soon. Glad it’s all working and I’m always poking around your site, because when Squarespace updates I’m constantly checking my site and trying to break things ;)

Val - it worked when I upgraded and then put my old files back in again. Yay! But I never had any problems with the site/themes like you did. What was the problem in the end? Oh - and thanks for the code. Yeah, that didn’t become important until AFTER I’d released the themes. :p Typical!

Sharon - yeah, the Meez is the closest I can get to putting a photo here, but it’s close! And I’d help with your library. Pft. ;P

Jessica - That functionality of the site is going (which is why I’m using passwords these days instead of hidden posts) so don’t sweat it. I just need to update properly.

Bon - go for it! This site uses *counts* 37 plugins, so that’s where my problems were. :p But considering only two things went wrong, it’s not bad at all - as I said, go for it! (And new site?! Really?! YAY!)

Claire - see my comment to Jess. I’m so terrified of the plugin malfunctioning and hidden posts displaying to all and sundry I’ve simply stopped using it. :p Passwords are the way to go!

    Char - thanks so much! I love being poked . . . !!

LOL, it’s nothing to get excited about. It’s just a re-vamp of my Rachael Stirling site. :P It uses 24 plugins at the moment. Maybe I should upgrade before I install even more!

Sweet! But let’s wait until you’re feeling better, shall we? Chest infections are a bugger.

I do need some recuperation time, although I suck at being ill. Spent all day coughing my guts up whilst making a new WP theme. :P

Well you know, my site is running fine but I still can’t use widgets. Pretty much any theme I throw in there tells me that there are no sidebars defined, even if there are (like with yours). But to get my K2 working again, I had to turn off a couple of things like AJAX search and archives. Those things work fine normally, just the AJAX is screwy or something. That theme also is telling me no widgets but I love the K2 sidebar manager so I use that instead. It lets me define which pages or types of pages to display a widget on which I don’t think the normal widget manager lets me do. It also has a backup/restore feature.

So, yeah, I don’t know what the deal is with the widgets, all I can figure is I must have something screwy in my database but have no idea what it is!!

Nah - I upgraded to 2.5.1 and it looks as though it’s done the same thing again. Fucking thing. Sigh.

Am working on it - thanks for letting me know!
