The Day With the News

M started a new job today. Same place and it’s shift work, but it’s (much) more money, more experience for him and a great opportunity. Pluses outweigh the minuses. Good Times.

He accepted the position in July but it’s taken them this long to sort everything out and release the shift pattern. For two weeks they’re all on days as they complete training and get into the new regime, but after that they start the day/night rotation. His is the one shift that falls over Christmas Eve night AND Christmas Day night. AND then New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day (when we’re usually in Brighton). So S and I will effectively be spending Christmas alone. Bad - no wait, shitty, awful, SHIT - Times.

This news is doing nothing to ease the bad gunky.

Updated: Just re-read this and realised how ungrateful I sound. He works in manufacturing, so the fact that he has a job at all should be enough for me to shut the fuck up. Ignore me. Am just a miserable twat lately.

Oh no! That would be… terrible! How can a workplace even have shifts on Christmas Eve night and Christmas Day?!

That is actually gobsmackingly terrible. (Yes, I just made a word up because it’s that bad!).

Crikey, girl. Shift work sucks donkey balls.

As it happens last year I spent the days either side of Christmas (and Christmas Day itself) alone with my sister’s cat. And I shouldn’t have.

I had no presents, no Christmas meal. Just me, uber-cutie kitty and a piece of gammon in the fridge. Thankfully, the gammon became a hugely tasty treat for the both of us!

And this year will be the same, except for no kitty and probably no gammon. Just me. :’(

Ah well, good thing I’m not Christian I suppose!

What does he do that requires him to work those nights?!

Just caught your other post - sucks that you’re feeling blue at the moment, I hope something comes along to cheer you up soon.

He does NOTHING that requires the kind of necessity that denies people their Christmas holidays. :p He works in manufacturing - nothing special, nothing exciting.

I don’t mind shift work generally, and if he was working one of the holidays and not the other, that too would be okay. But to be working both Christmas and NY? It fucking sucks.

And love you, Emz. Hey, if I’m on my tod you can always come to me. :P I can’t cook, but there’ll be plenty of gin and chocolate.

I’ve spent a few Christmases by myself, one when I was 15 and a few others since then. I even remember having a jacket potato with those Bernard Matthew turkey slices just so I didn’t feel so bad :p

Sometimes you have the whole family there and sometimes you don’t. Still sucks though. He doesn’t work too far from home though?

Hey, I think you’re entitled to be pissed off about that. Doesn’t sound ungrateful.

Can’t believe someone who doesn’t work in a hospital or a police station has to work over Xmas and NY. That properly sucks.

Celebrate your Xmas a week early or something and then ignore it when it’s actually happening.

Aww… well, at least he’s making (much!) more money. :D That’s always a good thing. Otherwise I’m sorry things don’t seem to be going your way lately. :(

    *more hugs*

It kinda sucks that he’s working the Christmas shift. But think of the over he (should) be paid for it. Think of the wad of Benjamins (or the UK equivalent, like £50 notes) in your hands.

Hopefully this Christmas shift only be for this one year anyway. What are the chances of it be a regular occurrence?

As you know, I work shifts so I do feel your pain. Not only have me and the other half both copped the Xmas and New Year shifts this year, but I’ve got them next year as well. Bloody brilliant. Is M working Boxing Day? Maybe you can save your Xmas celebrations until then. Not quite the same, but better than nothing.

Either that or he can perhaps tell them that he’s made plans to go on holiday at Xmas - would they honour those plans if he told them that he made them before the new job came about..?
