The Day My Bookshelf Was Back (5)
After searching for some time for the right plugin, I’ve finally been able to restore my Bookshelf/Reviews - hurray!
I’m really pleased at how it’s turned out, and with comparatively little meddling (read: hacking) from me, either. Let me know what you think - particularly if you have a recommendation!
I’ve also made some minor tweaks to ‘Caffeinated’ by adding links to the previous five posts at the bottom of the listings, and also adding links to the Latest Updates section, which I’m anxious to keep away from the main blog, but also don’t want to see overlooked, either! I think it looks okay, but if anyone has strong opinions either way, don’t hesitate to let me know. :)

The Day There Were Updates Comments Off
Multiple posting in one day? Man, you gotta know that things are bat-shit crazy in my life. I have a habit of turning to code when I’m miserable - clear, logical and precise, it offers stability where I’d otherwise have none. Consider the work I’ve done today - along with two hours of burning off all the negativity of this weekend in the gym - as my tonic. Anyway, shall I shut up and move on?
Ordinarily I keep sitely updates in, funnily enough, the site update section, which is a separate category that’s magically kept off of the front page. But as I’ve been busy today mucking about and making some substantial updates (read: potential for substantial mistakes), I thought I’d bring this to the attention of FA.com’s general readership. I know - you can barely contain yourself.
I’ll keep it concise, but essentially, the latest updates all consider accessibility and stuff that, quite frankly, you shouldn’t even notice . . .
- The Accessibility Statement has been refined and re-added, after I removed it a little while ago for being, well, shite. Visit my muse Dive Into Accessibility for the greatest How To guide ever written;
- The site is now, at least I hope, fully Lynx and text-browser compatible, and displays correctly and semantically without CSS;
- Access keys have been updated and added to the default theme ‘Caffeinated’ (other themes should be amended shortly);
- A search box has been added (I hate ‘em and never use ‘em, but they’re accessibility friendly, so . . . )
- Comment links have been added after the signature on the default theme for screen-readers and text-only browsers;
- I still can’t figure out what the comments are puked up before the entry on Caffeinated, but I’m working on it, honest - I never give up;
- It took freakin’ ages to get the skip navigation link to work and remain XHTML 1.1 valid, but I got there in the end - was finally able to put it back today;
- And, finally, I did some general tidying up, revisions and amendments. As always, please report any errors can be reported right here.
The changes have been tested on FireFox (PC), Opera (PC), Netscape (PC), IE 6 (PC) and Lynx, but that’s where my DIY testing stops, for I don’t have anything else installed and am too poor to own a Mac. Heh. If you come across something that looks crapola - say, HR dividers that are supposed to be hidden, for example, or broken images and/or text - could you be a doll and let me know? My ever-so-slightly OCD self will thank you for it.
My brain and I are now going to retire for the night. Don’t forget to answer the questions below, y’hear?
ETA 13/11/06: On my work PC I’ve realised that the ‘hidden’ text, which is properly hiding in FireFox, Opera and on my home IE, isn’t behaving itself here. I’ve removed the HR lines (added to distinguish between posts more effectively in text browsers) but, I think, the other hidden text is appropriately hidden.
I believe that this has been corrected now, but please let me know if you see anything amiss!

Just a couple of updates for you: firstly, I’ve added a new plugin that indicates via a little icon when links are external, something I’ve been meaning to do for ages but just never got around to.
