I always love Chick Lit written by guys, and this is no exception – not least because this is set in 1985 student England. The pop culture references alone, whilst occasionally a little abstract for me (how delighted am I that I’m too young to truly appreciate them all?!), are brilliant, but coupled with the inevitable discomfort of adolescent lusting and bad skin days, this really nails the awkwardness of Freshers’ Life.

The narrator writes his story clearly and with considerable ease, and I often felt more like I was listening to a friend than reading a book. Whilst the story never left me bored, I did however feel that it somehow lacked pace.

I never thought that a novel revolving around University Challenge could possibly be of interest but just goes to show, you can never know how a book will truly touch you!
